Her Majesty’s Theatre passed away on the 23rd of October 1983 surrounded by its family of Brisbane protesters. Born in 1888 to the Italian architect Andrea Stombuco,
Her Majesty’s Theatre was considered to be the largest theatre in Brisbane. Famous for the Italian Renaissance façades, Her Majesty’s Theatre welcomed famous performers such as contralto singer Dame Clara Butt, pianist Ignacy Paderewski, and Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh performed at the theatre. Singer Jon English even saw a ghost when playing ‘Judas’ in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. Scott Richards and Monica Nolan remember watching ‘Evita’ in 1982. Jacques Janek and Gregory Adams watched ‘Rocky Horror’. Sean O’Brien, Cindy Lee, and Lynda Hansen took ballet lessons there. Her Majesty’s Theatre suffered a slow death as disagreement over the preservation of the façade gave Brisbanites hope over its partial survival. However, this too did not survive.
Her Majesty’s Theatre was survived by a hole for 2 years before being replaced by a shopping mall.
