Trades Hall departed Brisbane in April 1986. Born in 1923, Trades hall was the meeting point of Queensland’s trades union members where union meetings and social and educational events were held. Adjacent to the surviving Jacob’s Ladder on 348 Edward Street, Trades Hall was a symbol of unity within the Trades union. In the early 70’s, the Trades Hall welcomed the youth under the name of FOCO- a club combining entertainment and culture. Trades Hall emulated the leftist counterculture and hosted poetry readings, radical films, and political discussions. The adjoining bookshop offered Brisbane’s youth a selection of highly censored anti-authoritarian and anti-imperialist books and paraphernalia.
Trades Hall was survived by a hole for one year before being replaced by a 26-storey tower.
