York Hotel later known as New York Hotel, was a prominent member of Queen Street and was distinguished by its entrance that was a raised curved section in the awning over the footpath. York Hotel welcomed women in the Ladies Lounge. Ross Turner and Chris Kelson remember the ‘Madison Square Garden’ pub or ‘Maddy’ where they had 80c beers to start off the night. Richard Jeffrys, Sue Carman, Rita Shubert, Marisa Brennan, and Jeff Denaro remember its caged elevator. Lorraine Manteit and Sue Kratzmann remember the scrumptious seafood buffet laid out. To many Brisbanites such as Rita Schubert, Kathy Hayes, and Tracy Smith New York Hotel was their first experience of a night club. Carlton Hotel enjoyed performances by Allniters, John Cooper Clarke, Simon Gallagher to name a few.
York Hotel was survived by a hole for 2 years and leaves
behind the famous façade as part of a shopping mall.
